Book Review: Marker by Robin Cook

The medical thriller that made me fall in love with science

 Summary (No Spoilers)

Marker follows Dr. Laurie Montgomery, a medical examiner in New York, who stumbles upon a chilling pattern: young, healthy people dying mysteriously after routine surgeries. While everyone around her tries to brush it off, Laurie’s instincts push her to investigate further... and what she uncovers is darker than she ever imagined.

 My Thoughts

I picked up this book during a time when I was seriously considering taking biology and possibly pursuing a career in the medical field. I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but I was curious. Reading Marker was like the universe handing me a sign.

This was my very first Robin Cook novel, and it completely pulled me in. His writing is so clean and sharp—it doesn’t waste time, and it builds suspense so well. Even though the story is packed with medical details, I never felt lost. I actually found myself even more fascinated by medicine and how much goes on behind the scenes in hospitals.

Laurie Montgomery is honestly the kind of woman I’d want to be: smart, strong, and not afraid to go against the system when she knows something’s wrong. I loved watching her dig deeper, trust her gut, and keep going even when the odds were stacked against her.

 What I Loved

  • The slow-burn suspense that kept me flipping pages
  • The realistic and detailed look at the medical world (without being boring!)
  • Laurie’s character—strong, stubborn, and inspiring
  • How the book made me want to learn more about science

 Final Thoughts

Marker wasn’t just a good book—it was a timing thing. I read it when I needed clarity, and somehow, it gave me that. It made me think about science and medicine in a whole new way. I finished the last page feeling inspired, curious, and weirdly emotional (and yes, a little freaked out too ).

If you’re someone who's at a crossroads—trying to figure out what you love or where you belong—this book might connect with you in ways you don’t expect. And if you’ve never read Robin Cook before, trust me… this is an amazing place to start.

PS: I am trying to write it like a professional reviewer.
